Pallid Blue Gown

lyrics

Chose to wear my boots today
Morning's dry but grey, and rain is on the way
Jot down a jumbled verse or two
Before I get my lazy ass up out this room

A room where I don't even live
I just keep stuff here for when I sleep on the pull-out bed
Stuff my notebook in my coat
As if I even have a grown-up place to go

That one secluded bench in Central Park
Western edge, maybe two blocks north of the trail off 106th
Smoke the customary spliff
Try to write some more but find the rhymes a little stiff

Drive an hour past Albany
Find an amber-speckled clearing in the woods
Marked with faces on the trees
That never look the same to you as they do to me

Start to play your mandolin
One at a time, you'll notice voices joining in
Some deep and some soaring high
Roots sing to the soil and branches to the sky

And from the sky there comes a new song
The ground is now compelled to sound notes low and long
Each passing bird donates a phrase
Crickets swell and fade to thank the sun for one more day

From brand new dark rises a moon
Near full and smiling at the faces on the trees
You watch the fear inside them freeze
They sing again and winds breathe sleep to wanting New York City

Watch the lights shining down
See the earth in its pallid blue gown
Watch the lights shining down
See the truth in its tower in the clouds [x2]

Watch the lights shining down
See the truth in its tower in the clouds [x4]

Watch the lights shining down
See the earth in its pallid blue gown
Watch the lights shining down
See the truth in its tower in the clouds

about

Queen Cabbage New York, New York

Originating in late 2017 at SUNY Purchase, Queen Cabbage is a folky art rock band dedicated to synthesizing silliness, seriousness, life, death, the beautiful, and the grotesque into earnest, powerful, emotionally immediate music for eager feet to dance and stumble to, for thoughtful hearts to beat and break to, and—most importantly—for authority figures to disapprove of.
